On the recommendation of Dmitry Shostakovich, Dmitriev entered the Moscow State Conservatory where he studied with Dmitry Kabalevsky. In the years following graduation in 1968, Dmitriev pursued a dual career as educator and composer, teaching at the Gnessin State Musical Pedagogical Institute and the central school of the Moscow Conservatory; his academic publications include a treatise on percussion instruments and a study of orchestration.
